Rayleigh Windmill

The Mill was built in 1809 and thrived in the early 19th Century, being the place to which corn from the surrounding area was brought for grinding. Changing hands over the next few decades, the mill has been powered by wind, steam, diesel power and electricity. In the 1970s restoration work allowed the mill to be opened to the public. Following a major refurbishment programme, the Rayleigh Windmill re-opened in 2006 and has continued to surprise and entertain visitors of all ages since.

Visitors who explore this 210 year old Grade II listed building can learn how the Windmill worked, try the quiz in the museum, dress up in traditional costumes and find out about the Castle that once stood on Rayleigh Mount! The Windmill also hosts various exhibitions throughout the season on the 2nd floor.
