The Munnings Art Museum

Celebrated as one of England’s finest equestrian painters, Sir Alfred Munnings forged much of his early reputation as a result of his war artist commission in France during 1918, serving in eastern France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. These paintings were first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 2019 and brought Munnings huge critical acclaim.

In 2019, for the first time in 100 years, forty-one wartime paintings by Munnings are returning together to United Kingdom from the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa. In this once-in-a-lifetime display, the finished paintings will be shown side by side with their surviving sketchbooks still owned by The Munnings Art Museum. This is the first time the sketchbooks have been on public display together with the finished pictures, and will provide a unique view of life ‘behind the lines’.

Admission to the museum in 2019 includes access to the special exhibition and a further 150 of the artist's life works hung chronologically throughout the main rooms charting the rise of this miller’s son to multimillion-pound selling artist.

Castle House, described by Munnings as "the house of my dreams", is an elegant Tudor and Georgian building and one of the founding centres of Dedham's cloth industry. Munnings lived and worked here for over forty years until his death in 1959. The house, garden, artist’s studio and café are set in forty acres of beautiful countryside in the Dedham Vale, close to the river Stour, on the borders of Suffolk and Essex.
